Want to introduce Chinese New Year greetings to your kids in a fun way?

Here is an idea for you! Try fortune cookies craft with secret messages!

These fortune cookies help to:

1. Create a surprise element with each fortune cookie carrying a Chinese greeting message.

2. Fine motor skills including cutting, folding, and glue application.

3. Numeracy: Learn to arrange the Chinese greetings in numerical order (一，二， 三 etc)

4. Chinese greetings: Learn Chinese greetings for the new year!

We have done the preparation for you, so you just need to print, cut (or can have your child cut it out) and play!

You will need:

1. Brown paper for the cookies (white or other colours are also fine, can just encourage a little colouring activity!)

2. White paper for the greetings

3. Scissors

4. Glue

[Suggestion] To save time, you can prepare 8 cookies before you do the last 2 with your kid.

There are 14 greetings in total (with 10 greetings based on numbers)

Step 1: Cut out the circle fortune cookies 🥠 and the greetings

Step 2: Lay a new year greeting at the centre of the fortune cookie paper

Step 3: Glue a dot size at one side of the cookie paper

Step 4: Fold the circle fortune cookie to the glue dot (do not press down at the centre fold)

Step 5: Glue a quarter of the semicircle at the end closer to the fold

Step 6: Fold again from one side to the glue portion of the semicircle!

There you have it! Your very own fortune cookie! 🥠

[Suggestion] I would keep away the other cookies until I finish the activity with my kid then show them the rest of the cookies to pull out the secret message!

Extended activity

Have the child arrange the Chinese New Year greetings in numerical order!
