S is for Spiders, Seaweed and Strawberries!

Updated: Dec 18, 2019

Today I had a whole morning, uninterrupted, individual 1-on-1 time with T (of course minus the occasional distractions), which is rare and I took the opportunity to conduct the letter S lesson!

As you know I am on this series of alphabet crafts and with the limited time, I haven’t been able to conduct more than a song + letter craft with T. Today was a great opportunity since more time was on my hands!

Most of the activities carried out (besides the craft) were impromptu and that’s what I liked about it, infusing creativity in my interactions with T. Even the last activity which T loved the most was created on the spot! Stay tuned to find out what it is!

Letter S songs

We started off with singing letter S songs such as The itsy-bitsy spider and little miss muffin since we were on to a spider craft 🕷.

S is for Spider

The prep work:

- Cut out letter S on black A4 paper

- Cut out 8x spider legs

- 2 eyes

- Glue stick

The finished product:

Letter S Stencil Sponge craft:

On that morning, thought that S for Stencil was a great idea 💡 and especially with sponge 🧽 and paint 🎨 ! Which kid is not a fan of these?

The prep work:

- The stencil from the cut out letter S (from previous craft)

- 2 sponge rollers

- 2 paint holders

- Red and Blue paint

The finished product:

We also read a book 📖 on spiders 🕷. You can refer to my post on Spiders here (to be uploaded soon) or find some book suggestions below:

- The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle

- Aaaarrgghh! Spider! by Lydia Monks

- National Geographic Readers: Spiders by Laura Marsh (non-fiction)

Sensory play with spiders 🕷 and scorpions 🦂

The prep work:

- Paper plate

- Brown/black paint (or any other colour)

- Roller sponge

- Hole puncher

- A ball of string

- Scissors

- Creepy crawlies

The process:

Step 1) Paint the paper plate with the sponge roller and leave to dry

Step 2) Cut a round circle at the middle of the painted paper plate

Step 3) Punch holes around the inner circle of the paper plate

Step 4) String through the holes on the paper plate

Step 5) Add in the creepy crawlies and PLAY!

The final product:

[This craft requires some time for the paper plate to dry, so make sure you give it some time to dry. You may want to prioritize this as the first craft to give it time to dry and continue later.

If your kid is younger eg. 2-3 years old, you may want to prepare the entire craft so that the kid can play with the creepy crawlies as sensory play or have this completed another day. Suggestion is not to pack more than 2 crafts within the morning for younger kids. A better way is to have 2 crafts and have sensory play!]

Speaking the letter S throughout the morning:

S is for spider 🕷 and scorpion 🦂 .

S is for sponge 🧽 , sticky glue, sit and scoop.

S is for seaweed, strawberries and soup 🥣 . Snacking on seaweed and dried strawberries 🍓 🍓 🍓 !

The happiest part of the letter S lesson!

Of course the kiddo asked for second helping!

Hope you enjoyed my post and gleam some craft ideas and useful tips!

Enjoy time with your kids!
